Clamshell Buckets

Sloss Furnaces is now a museum in Birmingham, Alabama. The city of Birmingham was created shortly after the U.S. Civil War to facilitate iron making. At that time, steel was not being produced industrially. The Birmingham area has ample supplies of iron ore, coal and limestone, the three ingredients used to make iron. Sloss Furnaces ceased operation in the early Seventies when new pollution laws made operation uneconomical. The facility was donated to the city, and is the only early facility of its kind in Birmingham that has been preserved.
