FED 5 - Russian Rangefinder Love!

9

With exact specifications as Leicas, the FED found its way into the hand of many photographers who grew to love the quirks of this camera.

Adapting the designs of its predecessors, the FED 5 was an improvement more than a complete makeover. From its roots from Leica, the external cosmetics are similar to those of the legendary German lensmaker. Pry further into the FED and one would see that the it could not be too far off from its more distinguished cousins.

At first touch, the FED 5 weighs down in my hands. Sure it does, weighing in at almost a kilogram. Yet holding it up to my face, the rounded grip made so famous by Leica proves its worth on the FED 5. Ergonomics and weight are a plus on such a camera, where there is no image stabilizer or technology to offset handshake.

Peer into the viewfinder and the yellow patch sits in the center of everything. Focusing becomes easy with a clear patch, I was lucky to get one that was well serviced. Coupled with the highly regarded Industar 61L/D 53mm F/2.8 lens with rare earth elements, pictures are great even in lowlight.

In addition to the standards, there is a meter that sets it apart from the FED 5B. No more exposure problems! But be sure to check it against an accurate light meter first!

But with Russian cameras, the quality control can sometimes be bad on FEDs. My copy had some light leaks which I feel adds character to my shots! Silver lining!

So go get one now! From Russia, with rangefinder love!
