Séverin Boonne considers photography as his most intimate way of expression. Aside from revealing things about himself, creating images with his trusty cameras helps calm his nerves and keeps him relaxed. In this interview, our newcomer of the week from France talks more about his humble beginnings, passion for shooting film, and more.

Location: Paris, France

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

I'm 35 years old. I'm living and working in Paris. I am a creative director in an advertising agency. Music and photography have always been central to my life, that's why it became my job today. Music was my outlet for a long time. Now, I think photography has become my most intimate way of expression. My first film camera belonged to my father, a Canon AE-1 that he kindly gave me.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

The first time I read an article on the principle of multiple exposures, I found myself totally immersed in hundreds of cool photographs, which are very colorful and very lively. Before purchasing my LC-A, I browsed through a lot of galleries of lomographers who use it, which definitely charmed and inspired me a lot. Finally, I signed up and I'm glad to be part of a community that speak the same language.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

The first one, of course. (Take your camera everywhere you go.) It has became a daily and natural reflex.

In fact, the only interesting rule is the last one (Don't worry about any rules). I believe that the community understood it well.

In this digital age, why still film?

For my job, I use a digital camera because it's more convenient and less expensive. But in my daily life, my heart beats only for film cameras. For many reasons: for that decisive moment, for the wait, for the surprising result. I take photography as a kind of therapy that calms me down and helps me express and reveal things about myself.

Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?

Voigtlander Bessa R2A, my last purchase. A small marvel with an incredible image quality. I still have my heart for my Lomo LC-A for its unique rendering of photos in black and white.

What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?

Definitely the Lomo LC-A 120! I would be curious of test the Petzval 58 Art Lens as well.

Any song or movie you live by?

The dark tenderness of Chokebore. "Speed Of Sound" is the first track of the album "Black Black," a real masterpiece about melancholy.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

I like so many things about this photograph. I'm a bit like this little fisherman sometimes.

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

I haven't been in the community long enough so it's quite difficult to bring out names of particular lomographers. The artistic level is very good and many pictures impress me.

I knew the work of @lafilledeer before joining the community. I like her work enormously. It's very natural and instinctive, without compromise. Besides being a magnificent friend, her favorite camera is a Canon AE-1, which means she's necessarily a good person.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

Everyday, I'd like to discover talented lomographers who'll inspire me and meet some of them in the future. Creativity is the essence of life.
