For Julia Adamova, experimentation is the key to creating compelling images. Breaking free from strict photographic rules, she embraces unexpected light leaks and noticeable film grains and incorporates these “flaws” on her work.

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

I hold a degree in art and design. My family is my husband Alexander and a red cat called May. I adore the North, mountains, icebreakers, and polar bears. I love riding bike, drawing, and taking pictures. My interest in analog photography started about three years ago. I was holding a camera in my hands and it just struck me how fascinating it is.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

I’ve known about the Community for a long time and just recently decided to join and share my work.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

Forget about rules!

There should not be any restrictions in photography. The 10 Golden Rules is more like parting words before the deep-water immersion in the world of Lomography. Take pictures more often, experiment with the color, overlapping, and try to create your interesting story from the mundane.

In this digital age, why still film?

For me analog photography is like painting a picture. You have an idea and you try to bring it to life. This a slow process much like the steps of an unhurried man. And how beautiful the film’s defects look!

Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?

Holga CFN 120. I love the results I get in the end. During the two years of our friendship she has never failed me. With every new film roll that I load, I open new possibilities. Many people believe this camera to be unpredictable, but I don’t think so.

What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?

My wish came true. Just couple of days ago I bought a Lomo LC-A and now I am waiting for sunny days to test this camera that I’ve heard so much about.

Any song or movie you live by?

As for music lately my preference and my admiration goes to Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. If you’re asking about films, then it is definitely “De vliegende Hollander” by Jos Stelling.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

It is beautiful and it feels like a cold breeze.

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

@andycurtis has very interesting works. One can completely immerse oneself in the illusory world he created with his beautiful execution and technique.
