Lomopedia: Carl Zeiss Jena Biometar 80 mm f2.8 Lens

Straight up, the Jena Biometar 80 mm f/2.8 lens by Carl Zeiss is a high-quality vintage camera lens. It was made specifically for Pentacon Six (P6) medium format cameras and came in three versions throughout its production period. Although it was made for medium format photography, there’s also a Biometar lens made for 35 mm cameras.

This vintage lens’s strong points are its build and image quality. At just 260 grams, this is quite a light prime lens even with its big design. Overall, the components complement each other in form and even in function. The focusing ring is placed near the end of the lens – characteristic of specially designed lenses for waist-level photography (using medium format cameras.)

The Biometar lens is a well-built, well-designed camera lens. The image quality is impressive even when used at wide apertures. It’s a consistent lens that also has some interesting bokeh — a plus point for portrait photographers and those photo enthusiasts who are looking for some in-camera effects. All in all, you get what you pay for with the Biometar and interested buyers can definitely rely on the Carl Zeiss name and heritage.
