“Around the World in Analogue” is your bite-sized guide to the most amazing travel destinations across the globe, as documented by the members of the Lomography community. Today, we travel to Rio de Janeiro through the moody black and white photographs of lomographer Rhiannon.

Name: Rhiannon

Camera: Olympus OM-1
Film: Lomography Lady Grey B&W 400
Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio was the last place I visited in Brazil. The first thing I noticed was how polluted it was. From certain points you could even see the line of smog forming a photogenic line on the horizon. We were only there for four days but by within 24 hours I was feeling the dirt in my throat and nose. I was surprised since I’ve never experienced these quite so much anywhere I traveled and this was only a couple of months before the start of the Rio Olympics.

I’d just run two rolls of ordinary color film roll through my camera. It’s fairly unusual for me to use two of the same films in a row so I intended my last Brazil film to be a redcsale. But when I opened my bag that day the only film roll I found was the Lady Grey. I’ve had this film for a while but I never tried them due to what seems like an unending supply of inherited and expired Ilford. Then when I got this roll back, I was like “Wow! Why did I wait so long to try this?” It gives a totally different picture to what I get from using Ilford, which I think perfectly matches the sights of Rio.
