Meet the TEN AND ONE AWARDS judges: Gundula Blumi

Meet Gundula Blumi, a talented photographer based in Berlin whose stunning work was also featured in our magazine. She got her first camera when she was 10 years old and ever since she has been capturing the world around her. Her photographs are all about experimenting with different techniques such as water, light and color. Gundula’s work is featured in magazines such as Juxtapoz, Ignant and Worbz magazine.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography preserves the visual part of moments and memories. It was always important for me to document special situations. But photography can also create realities and moments that never existed. The photographic reality has no borders, everything is possible and that fascinates me.

How did you get started in photography?

My grandfather and also my parents photograph very much as long as I can remember and so I got my first camera when I was a child. With that camera I photographed everything that seems important to me.

While taste is subjective – in your opinion, what makes a good photo?

That’s difficult to say, because different people perceive photos in different ways, but I think that a photo is a good one if it triggers something in a viewer, if her or his eyes stops when they see the picture, for example because of the colors, the composition or the expression or because the viewer can identify with the picture.

What is your fondest photographic memory?

A few years ago a good friend and I met regularly to sit together and talk and drink wine. After a while we started to shoot photos. In her flat the light was perfect and we were in such a very special flow, it was great. For me those evenings had something magical.

With so many cameras and other image-making devices available today, more and more people are getting into photography – it can be a little difficult to make one’s work stand out. What advice would you give someone who seriously wants to pursue and succeed in this craft?

I think that it’s important to have a great pleasure in photography, it should be a kind of passion. It’s good to experiment a lot, so that you can develop and find your personal and individual style.
