Pandora's Box: "In Rooms" by Brittany Markert (NSFW)

A truth: life is simple, living isn’t. Within the grand scale of things, everything seems minuscule; how easy it is for the human to detach from soul and empathy and bury them within. This kept human condition and behavior is given limelight in photographer Brittany Markert’s riveting series.

Every person who walks the earth struggles and strives to live. It is not a phenomenon, it is a universal act. In an ironic turn, humans will keep the fear and pain all to themselves, locked and pent up, culminating the unknown.

As a young model being pressured by the intricate demands of fashion industry, Brittany could only run away from the troubles and psychological damages, and for a while it seemed like the only resolution.

It’s been a while now that Brittany is cautiously opening her own Pandora’s box. She eventually finds that everything stays the same. Despite all the running, the chaos and wounds never went away. However, she begins to find something else inside it.

Beauty was that ‘something else’.

Here, Brittany unmasks the self: bare and nude, the women in the photographs are stripped down to their truths and essence, then there are faded faces, as if hiding from a voyeuristic audience whilst they confront, play and try to conquer the demons.

Brittany’s In Rooms is a reveal hiding in plain sight: to live and fight another day is a silent battle.

Living is a continuous, complex effort; a constant work-in-progress until the end has been met.

“A world without art is a world without life… Art is a gift, a necessity, and reminds us of what it means to be human.” — Brittany Markert

“In Rooms” is the same.
