LomoAmigo: Barry Adamson and the Lomo'instant Wide

Barry Adamson is a UK based singer, songwriter, film maker and composer. He was bassist in post-punk band Magazine and co-founded Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. He has also worked on soundtracks for David Lynch's Lost Highway and Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers, taking inspiration from the likes of John Barry and Ennio Morricone. If that wasn't enough, Barry is also a keen photographer whose latest solo album "Know Where To Run" is a reaction to the photographs he took on a recent US tour. We gave him a Lomo'instant Wide camera to shoot with and asked him about his exhibition of photos which inspired the album.

Tell us a bit about yourself?
I am a musician, composer, film-maker and photographer. My career began in the post punk era as a teenager with New Wave band Magazine. I was also a founding member of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. From there I composed music for films and a few years later, directed a few shorts and then I started in earnest to take photographs a few years ago.

How did you get on shooting with the Lomo'instant Wide?
It's a fantastic and unpredictable beast of a camera and challenges and astounds in an age where digital manipulation has taken the ability to control the image to new heights. The Lomo'instant Wide opens a door simultaneously to the past and the present and the shots are like experiments to begin with, until you try out the different settings in different conditions and (maybe) see some consistent results! It offers a great way to develop a certain look through film and I'm thrilled to be using one.

What did you shoot?
I did some tests around the house and garden, day and night but it was when I ventured out that the world started to become interesting through the eye of the Lomo'instant Wide lens. I like to shoot lights and objects out of focus so they take on other meanings than are seen with the naked eye. I found myself using the camera's sometimes other worldly shooting possibilities to try and capture scenes in an odd way and also found myself referencing shots from bygone eras due to the texture of the medium.

Tell us about your exhibition, how did that come about?
I got the opportunity to take a Canon 5D mark iii and shoot across America because of a tour I was a part of with Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds for a few months in 2014. The shows were Coast to Coast and North and South, so I was able to take photos in literally very different states. Out of the material (which is essentially street photography), came the inspiration for my latest album, 'Know Where To Run'.

You can visit Barry's exhibition of photographs inspired by his latest album "Know Where To Run" at the Crucial Cafe Gallery Space in Chiswick from November 18th - January. you can find out more about his new album via the Barry Adamson website.
