First Impressions of the Daguerreotype Achromat 2.9/64 Art Lens: Jimmy Cheng

Jimmy Cheng is no stranger to a Lomography Art lens. He owns a Petzval 85 and has shot with the Jupiter 3+ and Russar+. We decided to lend him the Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens which he put to the test on a recent fashion shoot in Richmond park

Tell us about yourself?

I am a professional photographer. I make money from shooting weddings and streets with my Leica to feed my kids and buy clothes to wear. I love making friends and make photographs, though I have twins so I don’t need to make babies anymore. Photography is my life!

How would you describe your photography style?

My style of photography is always journalistic. As much as I love shooting under natural lights, I love exploring with artificial sources too.

What did you think the first time you saw the Daguerreotype art lens? What makes it appearance special?

When I first saw the lens it gave me an opportunity to explore the fantasy land. The dreamy and soft characteristic was something that I couldn’t achieve with modern lenses without heavy manipulations. I am a photographer who likes to do 99% of the work in camera than the other way around. So this lens is perfect for me to get the very unique and specific look. I am also an admirer of vintage black and white movies and posters and the Daguerreotype Achromat lens is just the lens for it.

What did you photograph? What camera did you use?

I took the opportunity of a model shoot to test out the Daguerreotype Achromat lens. My initial plan was to get something very 1920-ish monochrome images that were inspired by movies. I did just that and some of the images were just stunning.

What’s coming up in the future?

Now that I have tried all the lenses by Lomography, I will continue to explore all the existing and future art lenses to see if I can enter my fantasy world. This is a good way to escape from my day to day photography jobs, yet still relating to my camera, which is something that I love.
