Cat's Eyes Take a Trip to Iceland

Cat's Eyes are an alternative pop duo formed of vocalist Faris Badwan, known for his work with English indie rock band the Horrors, and Italian-Canadian soprano, composer and multi-instrumentalist Rachel Zeffira. We gave them a La Sardina to shoot with whilst on their writing trip in Iceland and the resulting shots are amazing.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Faris Badwan and I play in Cat’s Eyes and The Horrors.

What inspires you to write music?

I don’t really listen to music that much to get ideas - I kind of prefer getting inspiration from other sources. Reading always makes me want to write - Phillip K Dick, Nabokov, James Joyce. I like writers that twist words. I get a lot of vocal melody ideas when I go out walking - your footsteps are like a metronome and writing over a rhythm is a lot easier.

How did you get on shooting with the camera?

I really liked the camera - I’m still getting to grips with it to be honest but the frame rewinding function looks like it could have some really interesting possibilities. The Lomo cameras seem to get great colours in bright sunlight so I look forward to using it on tour next summer. The ones in lower light can have a really interesting texture though - almost like watercolours. I went to Iceland on a writing trip just after receiving the camera and that’s where all of these pictures were shot. It was me and Rhys from the Horrors in a remote log cabin in the middle of nowhere.. on the last night of our stay we saw the northern lights but I wasn’t able to capture them on film.

If your photos could have a soundtrack, what would it be?

Arthur Russell - The Platform on the Ocean
For Against - Amen Yves
Magazine - Definitive Gaze
Slowdive - Souvlaki Space Station
John Lennon - #9 Dream

What’s coming up in the future?

Mars will be colonised, humans will learn to travel through time, sentient robots will eventually take over the Earth.
