Affinity for Analog: LomoAmigos Balkan Beat Box

1

Israel-based musicians Balkan Beat Box are inspired by a variety of styles: klezmer, reggae, and hiphop to name a few. As it turns out, they were also quite inspired while shooting with the Lomo'Instant Wide on tour and share their photos with us here.

Please introduce yourself to the Lomography community.

Hi, community. We’re Balkan Beat Box. We started the band a little over 10 years ago in Brooklyn and now based in Tel Aviv, Israel, but consider the whole world to be our home.

Tell us about your music. How did Balkan Beat Box get started, what inspires you?

Tamir (drums) and Ori (sax) met in Brooklyn and played in a bunch of bands including Gogol Bordello before forming Balkan Beat Box. Tomer (vocals), joined in 2006 after moving to the US. We’re honestly inspired by so much. Musically, it’s a mix of jazz, klezmer, reggae, hiphop and pretty much anything that moves us.

What was your experience like with the Lomo'Instant Wide?

It was so easy to use and we had a really great time taking pictures on tour.

What is the crossover between analog photography and music for you?

It’s all about creating a real feeling.

Why is analog important?

We don’t have a problem with digital in music. However, with analog, there’s an element of truth that comes with the creation. It's all about the tools you choose to use and how you use them.

Anything you learned along the way about using it that you'd like to share -- tips and tricks?

With analog cameras and limited shots available, setting up the shot and getting it “right” is important again. It’s crazy to think that people haven’t needed to worry about such things since digital cameras came about.

What's next for BBB?

We’re touring in 2017, have some remixes from our album Shout it Out coming out, and lots of exciting things we can’t mention just yet.
