First Impressions with the Lomo'Instant Automat Glass: Luna Simoncini

3

Our new brand instant creation is a must-have of fashion photography: it is perfect for sharp, stylish, pop and romantic portraits.

Our lovely community member Luna has always been fascinating by instant photography, and she was one of the first lucky ones to test the new Lomo'Instant Automat Glass, with which she created a sugary pastel-toned shooting, matching her sweet personality.

In this interview, Luna shares with us her first impressions about the camera and also a few secrets you will all need for shooting such stunning photos!

Hello Luna, you have been one of the first lucky ones to test the Lomo'Instant Automat Glass. Which were your first impressions?

Hello! It was a truly interesting and funny testing. I was really impressed since the beginning: it is a light, compact, and functional camera ... not to mention the high quality of the shots thanks to the glass lens. I appreciated the value of the glass lens even more when I shot with the Close-Up lens: the results really surprised me!

Tell us about this series.

I took inspiration from Guy Bourdin's colors; he has always been one of my favorite photographers. Firstly, I decided on the mood: I wanted to focus on complementary colors and on contrasts. All images play on the combination of strong chromatic accessories of impact. Also the make-up follows this line. Majority of the shoot was done outside with the exclusive use of natural light. I have set the Auto Mode Flash Off and positioned the model in both shadowy and direct sunlight areas, using the exposure compensation.

Even the indoor shots were shot without flash but only with the sunset lighting the model's face. During the last part of the photo shoot, it was almost completely dark. In that case, I have always used the flash to illuminate the scene, except in the close-up image (the eye of the girl, realized with the Close-Up lens), in which I used the iPhone torch as light.

For the flower shots realized with the Close-Up lens I only took advantage of the sunlight, and I put the flowers on a vase in semi-darkness. I shot freehand without tripod, trying to remain as stable as possible. In the photos with a lighter subject I moved the exposure compensation to -1.

Which camera feature have you mostly used and which advice would you give first-time users?

In most portraits and close-up photos I have used the Auto Mode Flash Off, almost exclusively with the closest focal length (0.3m/10-15cm). The Lomo'Instant Automat Glass is a super easy camera to handle. In order to obtain good results it is very important to calculate the distance from the subject, especially when you are creating portraits from a close distance or using the Close-Up Lens.

Before shooting, try to fully understand if you are 0.3m or 0.6m far from the subject and consequently set the appropriate focusing. If you are shooting with a lot of light or with direct sunlight, I suggest to set the camera in Mode Flash Off and the exposure compensation on -1. Regarding the double exposures, with natural light you won't need the flash.

Which is your favorite shot?

I have two actually. Regarding the photo shoot with the model Silvia Gesuelli, I like this portrait of her in which all the elements I was looking for since the beginning are there: strong contrasts, vibrant colors and sharpness of the image.

Among the macro images I pick, without a doubt, this double exposure of the rose in which the focusing is on point. As mentioned earlier, I was pleasantly impressed by the quality of the macro photos. I almost never do up-close shots like these ones and I had never used the Close-Up lens for instant photography. Thanks to the Lomo'Instant Automat Glass I put myself to test and I was fascinated.

As always, thanks to Luna for sharing her stunning pictures. Head to her LomoHome and her website to see more of her works.

Those are wonderful pictures - I am especially impressed with the double exposures. You have to get the lighting just right to be successful at them.
