Soaked in Turquoise & Purple: an Interview with Kate Hook on the LomoChrome Series

Majestic violet florals, minty green foliage, tangerine and aquamarine skies. English analogue shooter Kate Hook takes us into her bizarre realities which she fabricated with the LomoChrome Turquoise and LomoChrome Purple.

Enter her world with her interview in Lomography Magazine.

Hi Kate! Welcome to Lomography Magazine. Firstly why shoot in analogue? How did you and analogue photography met?

As fun as digital can be, in the high advanced technology era we’re in it’s nice to be creative with something that doesn’t require any computer manufacturing. Film photography is real, you’re capturing light onto silver halide crystals, not a digital sensor. It’s literally in your hands to capture something and not computer generate it.

My family were big into art, including photography, so I grew up with it pretty much. I didn’t get more into it until my early teens and eventually went to college to study photography. Honestly I barely got anything out of the course and it wasn’t until sometime after I really got creative with it!

What's your favorite technique (e.g. multiexposure, vignetting) in film photography?

Multiexposure for sure! My thinking behind some of my photos, in particular multiple exposures, is that I’m creating another world, a dream like state. A sense of escapism in a way. Everyday life can be so taxing and dull, so some of my multiexposures are little moments I’ve taken to create something that’s a bit more transcendental and magical.

Share us your experience with the LomoChrome Purple and LomoChrome Turquoise. How were the shooting experiences with two unique film stocks?

I can’t even put into words how much I love those films, but I’ll try! Many of the pictures I’ve taken with LomoChrome Purple and Turquoise are honestly some of the most beautiful images I’ve ever created. Those stocks really are something special, and they help produce special pictures too.

When would you usually use the Purple and the Turquoise?

Thinking about it, I shoot with Purple and Turquoise during different seasons. Purple in the Autumn and Winter, Turquoise in the Spring and Summer. However I try to mix it up too. Yet I feel the Purple really suits the more colder seasons as it produces very beautiful tones of blues, greens, and purples- obviously. To me the Turquoise is a roll of hot summer heat. The way it turns the bright blue summer sky to a delicious orange, oh my days- I love it! So, so, sooo beautiful!

If you can paint the world in a palette you love, what would the colors be and how would usual things look like?

Ohhhh, definitely citrus colours. Pinks, oranges, greens, yellows etc. Throw in some blues, purples, and reds too while we’re at it. The world would look so exotic, vivid and absolutely yummy. No dull and washed out colours.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Golden hours. Nature. I love it when it rains, or when it’s cloudy, and it clears right before the sun rises or sets, as the water in the sky creates the most stunning views as the light reflects from the sun. Also other things like flowers, trees, fields, primarily in spring or autumn. Benoît Debie is a huge inspiration of mine in regards to use of colour too. His work is just dream, after dream, after dream, after dream to me.

What's next for you? Any upcoming project you'd like us to know?

I’m trying to move towards more moving images, in particular celluloid cinematography. That’s in the long run as I’m saving up my pennies as it’s rather expensive to do!

At the start of 2017 I started a YouTube channel called Film Freek, which is about the more fun and experimental side of film photography. There’s quite a few good film photography channels on YouTube, which focus more on the technical aspects. I wanted to start up a channel to inspire some more creative thinking with film photography.

Also to create a place to showcase other film photographers, as over the years I’ve come across so many talented and inspirational ones who need way more exposure. The channel has been really fun to make and I’ve been getting great feedback on it, so I’m looking forward to producing and creating more content!
