Newcomer of the Week: Can Köroğlu (@cankrgl)

This week's featured community newcomer Can Köroğlu is a director, photographer, writer, and editor based in Istanbul. In this interview, he talks about his passion for creating boundless illusory words and capturing poetry through portraiture.

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

I have been working on short films and photographic compositions since 2009. I love creating illusory worlds, deep emotion and dream-filled characters.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

I always knew the community as I search on the web for new photos and results of different types of films and cameras. Quality of filtering system and freedom within Lomography made me join.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

Rule #10: Don't worry about any rules. I believe there must be no restrictions in both stand-still and moving picture. Just as I can put anything in front of my eyes I must be able to shoot anything I want. Freedom of imagination is the richest taste.

In this digital age, why still film?

I would ask the same question to grand filmmakers and photographers. I love the texture and reality within. Film is filled curiosity and pleasure, like the smell of the sea on my skin. It is more real than anything digital.

Your favorite analogue camera as of the moment? Why?

Canon A-1 and Nikon F3. I can get my clearest shots yet still I can push the limits of the moment and try risky shots as well.

What is the Lomography camera you’d want to have someday?

Lomo Lubitel 166+. I've only shot a couple times with a waist level viewfinder TLR camera and felt like I may discover mysterious scenes and try myself on challenging shots.

Any song, movie, or book you live by?

Tristan Revuer, a non-existent character in the movie Stay. He burned all of his paintings and tragically decided that committing suicide would be his greatest work of art because it's pure human failure. It is intriguing to witness Tristan Revuer's deep level of puzzling consciousness. He reminds me of ancient Greek poets. I think he is the reflection of the writer in the movie.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why is this your favorite?

After many years of taking photos this is my all-time favorite.

Any community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

@megandoherty is my current favorite. Vivid colors and original figures in her photos are life-like, just like in Xavier Dolan's highly saturated movies.

What are you looking forward to in our community?

Passionate, lustful, sensual, soft photographs.
