Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

I am a 22-year-old photography and writing student at Hampshire College and a part-time waitress at an Italian restaurant. I am originally from Brooklyn, NY.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

I have loved Lomography cameras and film for a long time, but I most recently joined the online community after applying to an internship at the Lomography Lab in NYC. I find the Lomography community to be unique and attracts some of the most experimental image makers, people who like to embrace the accidents, and I am always inspired by the work that I see here.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

  1. 10! Disregard the rules! With a slight caveat: I think that both in art making and in life, it is important to examine the rules and know them well - only then can you know the best and most important ways to break them. Breaking rules and making my own has helped me find my voice and my path as a person and an image maker.

In this digital age, why still film?

I started shooting film when I was 13 after finding my dad’s old Nikon EM tucked into the corner of the basement. I loved the smell of the film and the click of the shutter. A few years later I began to favor my digital camera but quickly discovered that because it was so easy to create and discard images, digital photography often lent itself to work that I wasn’t creatively invested in at all. My best work is always analog because film forces me to remember that every picture is something precious; it requires patience, attention to detail, and respect for every exposure.

Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?

Lately, I have been shooting with a Pentax 645. After using only 35mm for a long time, I have become obsessed with the tremendous detail that medium format offers.

What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?

Lomo Lubitel 166+!

Any song, book, or movie you live by?

One of the books I try to live by is Robert Capa’s Slightly Out of Focus. His fearless attitude allowed him to experience life so vividly and the sincerity of his photography and writing is truly breathtaking.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

I came across this picture by @asfodelegiallo a while back and saved it. The bright light and the way the sea matches the sky makes it feel like it was taken in a dream.

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

I’ve spent a long time lately on Tanya’s (@warning) page. She has such a huge and diverse body of work, and I always love getting lost in pictures taken in faraway places.

Your caveat on examining and knowing the rules and then breaking them is right on! Thanks for the interview!
