Alex Totaro and the Lomo'Instant Automat Glass

We discovered Alex Totaro after he shared his Lomo'Instant Automat Glass shots on social media. We were so excited to see his images, which were taken at the Barbican that we decided to contact him and find out more about his experiences with our newest instant camera.

Hi Alex, Tell us a bit about yourself?

Hello! I'm a social media manager and I love photography and travel. I moved from Buenos Aires to London about two years ago and I've set out on a mission to discover as many new places as possible. I'm very culture driven so have found London to be a great source of inspiration for my photography.

How did you get on shooting with the Lomo'Instant Automat Glass?
The Lomo'Instant Automat Glass has been surprisingly easy to use and hearing the final click-and-print sound is both delightfully satisfying and horrifying at the same time due to the nature of the format. It's my first foray into the Instant world and I've been having a lot of fun experimenting with all the capabilities of the Instant Glass.

What did you choose to shoot?

A bit of everything, but mostly what I'd consider 'iconic'. I travel a lot and aim to capture parts of that experience that help visualize the highlights. Lately, I've been doing lots of trips outdoors by the coast, so you'll see a lot of cliffs, waves and colorful seaside façades in my collection.

What is it you like about instant photography?

I like that its tech is very limited and you have to make each shot count, which forces you to think deeper about the subject, your distance, the angle and the environment around you. Equally, it's an extremely creative format. It's my first-time working with instant film and this was one of the key elements that drew me to it. Having said that, it also allows you to experiment in unique ways, such as multiple exposures and a wider format, which has been lots of fun.

What’s coming up in 2017?

I have a big trip to Japan next month where I'm excited to try new things, such as night photography and more multiple exposure shots (with a hedgehog or two at the animal cafe thrown in!). I don't have much going on after but I'm very spontaneous, I don't like to plan much so I'll jet off here and there on short breaks. I travel alone most of the time and photography is one of the things that really gets me moving in terms of discovering new places and experiencing new cultures.
