Last month I was working on a VW car commercial, luckily this time our advertising agency had a rather great idea and came up with the concept of heading west and exploring China’s part of the ancient Silk Road. We started out in Xi'an, traveled past the Western end of the Great Wall of China, past the Jiayuguan fortress in Gansu and then headed towards the border of the Xinjiang autonomous region. I had my X-Pan with me, loaded with an expired Fuji Velvia 50 film. This film was hibernating in my fridge for many years and developed a somewhat overly ‘Velvia’ look. Enhanced purple and magenta tones when shooting against the light and hints of green when shooting with the light. As far as expired films go, I feel this is very acceptable and even adds a bit more feel to an already dreamy environment.

Welcome to "Moguicheng", the Devil’s City. A national park next to the city of Hami in Eastern Xinjiang. At the edge of the Gobi desert, strange rock formations start to appear in the distance.These so-called Yadans are silent remains of millions of years of wind and water erosion. The place is quiet, hot and very dry, behind every hill the landscape repeats itself in an eerie manner, the place’s name suddenly feels very fitting. I love deserts and faraway desolate landscapes. As far as the wild west of China goes, it is a photographer’s dream, a mix of ethnic minorities, strange border towns, mountain chains followed by deserts followed by grasslands. Definitely worth a visit.
