Lucia Vnučková and Jakub Valovič (@lucia_and_jakub) have different reasons for taking up photography but they both share the same burning passion for the craft. Inspired by each other's creativity, they decided to collaborate on a single LomoHome. Get to know our community newcomers from Bratislava, Slovakia in this interview.

Jakub Valovič and Lucia Vnučková

Name: Jakub Valovič, Lucia Vnučková
LomoHome: @lucia_and_jakub
Location: Bratislava, Slovakia

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

Lucia: I´m a psychologist and cat lover. Also, I have recently discovered photography as a way of expressing my view of the world. It’s exciting for me, as I walk along and think about things how would they look on a photo. Photography is both relaxing and exciting for me. I think I still have to learn a great deal about it though.

Jakub: Hi, I'm currently working as a data analyst for ministry of education. For a long time, I wasn't really interested in photography, even when I took some (digital) pictures, I felt something was missing. Then, just last autumn, Lucia finally persuaded me to put my father's old Zenit 12 back to use and since then the photography became exciting again, like when I was 8 with my first toy camera.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

Lucia: Jakub found it after we were talking about posting some of our photos. We knew some websites where you can post your pictures, but I said it would be great if there was some analog website. He didn’t have to convince me.

Jakub: I think I found the shop first, then checked the photos and instantly liked the whole concept of (near) analog exclusivity.

Why did you decide to have just one LomoHome?

Both: Most of the time we shoot together. Besides, there are lots of our photos that are directly inspired by each other in a sense that one of us has an idea and the other one shoots it, so the result is truly a collaboration.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

Lucia: I try to take my camera with me as often as I can. And I like the one about no rules, for example, I often don’t follow my lightmeter, sometimes it does me good, sometimes not.

Jakub: I'll go with #10 (Forget about the rules.), because it creates nice contradictions...otherwise, I live more by the old-fashioned rules, that would mostly mean being slow and taking my time to think before shooting.

In this digital age, why still film?

Lucia: It’s kind of exciting when you don’t see the results immediately. Also, I think that analog pictures have a different quality than digital pictures. I fell in love with analog, so I don’t think I’ll go back to digital photography.

Jakub: Well, it's a real deal, digital is just a crude approximation of analog process, there is no way to get the same results from digital device. Also, it slows things down. When one has to think about proper exposition, depth of field and focus manually, it takes time that can be used to evaluate the most important thing (in my opinion), which is composition.

Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?

Lucia: I love my Portsreflex CX-6, it feels very natural to take pictures exactly with this camera, I don’t know why. I also like Zenit 12, it was our first analog camera, so there are some good memories with it.
Jakub: Revueflex SD-1, very lightweight and compact. But really any SLR with light meter would do.

What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?

Lucia: Sprocket Rocket got me interested, so I hope I’ll get it someday.

Jakub: Definitely Lubitel 166+.

Any song, book, or movie you live by?

Both: Well, probably by none, but some similarities could be found in Permanent Vacation by Jim Jarmusch and Black Books by Dylan Moran & Graham Linehan.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

Lucia: It’s difficult for me to name just one, there are so many great pictures on Lomography. Every day I see some that amaze me.

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

Lucia:, For example, @marcomaestro, he does great experiments.
Jakub: @cfehse - brilliant compositions
@bkspicture - very nice black and white contrasts and gradients

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

Lucia: I look forward to trying the LomoChrome Purple film, it seems very interesting to me.
Jakub: Experiments mostly, to see boundaries of film photography being pushed in new, interesting directions.

Thank you Lucia and Jakub for sharing your thoughts with us! Welcome to the Community and we're all looking forward to seeing more of your future work!
