Around the World in Analogue: Carcassonne, France

I bought my first SLR, a Canon AE-1 with a 50mm lens in a flea market in Toulouse. The following day, I went to Carcassonne, which is about an hour away on the train, and loaded up the AE-1 with a roll of Ilford film. I first came across Carcassonne in the board game which was named after its famous Cité – the medieval citadel, which was restored by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. The walk along the citadel wall gives a good view of the lower town.

It was also the second round of the French presidential that day. However, apart from the posters outside the polling station and very occasionally on the street, the election atmosphere is not apparent.

The lower town of Carcassonne is also worth a visit. On Pont Neuf, you can get a good view of the old bridge (Pont Vieux) and the castle.
