The Letter B: Andrea Amanda and the Lomo'Instant Square

Lomography NYC team member and multimedia artist Andrea Amanda tested out the Lomo'Instant Square with her friend Bethany Shao, who trains for the circus. The square format perfectly frames Bethany's bendy shapes! Check out the photos and Andrea's insights below.

Welcome to the Lomography Magazine, Andrea! Please tell us just a bit about yourself.

Venezuelan, 29, BA in Audiovisual Arts, a goofy and kind person, pretty much just trying to get out of the artistic closet. Currently working on a project called Deconstruction of Words (photography + paint). This shoot is Letter B.

What can you tell us about your super strong and flexible model?

Bethany Shao is more than a model for me. She is a very talented, sweet and shy person but as soon as she has her costume and lights on, she turns into this confident and strong woman. I guess this duality is in all of her corners because she is not just training for the circus, but for coding as well, what a combo!

What inspires you and keeps your creative gears turning?

For me creating is a necessity. Call me crazy but my gears never stop turning, my brain goes "what if... what if... what if..." and I just need to sit down and write ideas otherwise I will have nightmares about it. I paint, illustrate, dance, and now I photograph but all of these are mediums, the ultimate goal is just to get it out of my head hopefully in a cohesive, consistent concept.

Do you have any advice for those wanting to get started with art and photography?

If you can, go back to your notes from high school. There is something special about reconnecting with that creative person and those doodles. Usually, the work that we were not expecting for someone else to judge, therefore was free. That is a good point to start. For photography, get yourself a film camera and study light.

What advice would you give to your 15-year-old self?

Being kind is actually your strongest suit, not a weakness.

What are your thoughts instant photography?

Took me a while to get my head around it. I was so afraid of wasting film that I didn't take any photos at the beginning, now my business cards are instant photos hahaha!

What do you think of the Lomo’Instant Square?

I really liked it. So old fashioned looking and it folds into a convenient size. Between the camera, the paint and the brushes, space is always a concern.

How do you like the pictures taken with the Lomo'Instant Square?

I can't believe how sharp those pictures came out! The glass lens is definitely a plus for the quality of the photos and no pic was under-exposed or over-exposed.

What do you like about the square format? Does it change your shooting at all?

It makes me look for more lines and structure in the composition, so it's interesting! It's also very funny at the beginning, because I kept on turning the camera to take portraits out of habit!
