TEN AND ONE Residency Week Recap: Yoshitaka Goto (@gocchin)

First of all, I really appreciate being able to join the TEN AND ONE Residency Week in Vienna along with super cool Lomographers! We could never have any forgettable memories. The members are 11 people from 10 countries. I thought it'd be difficult to communicate with each other because of our different cultures, languages, personalities, etc. But we didn't have any worries. We respected each other, above all we are Lomographers!

We had some activities everyday of the week. Cyanotype workshop, LomoWalk with local Lomographers, visiting exhibitions, shooting at concerts as press, a day trip to Bratislava. One of them is building two huge LomoWalls. This was a very big mission for us because we had to set up them up at Künstlerhaus on the final day.

To build these LomoWalls, we had to shoot many photos that week. We needed thousands of photos to make it. Our photos weren't enough so we used the photos of the other TEN AND ONE Award winners.

We started building the first LomoWall on Thursday, two days before setting them up. We decided to follow an "EYE" design. The center will be filled with a dark color, which will then be surrounded by brighter ones. Before setting up the photos, we divided the into different colors: dark, red, blue, green, skin tones. Though it was simple work, we had some problems but they were cleared up easily.

After completing the first LomoWall, we had to think about the design of the second one. At first, the Lomo staff advised us to make a typical style of LomoWall. But we refused and had to think original design. This was so difficult for us. We thought about many, many ideas including impossible ones. It was already midnight when we finally decided what do to. Our second wall design was inspired by Mondrian.

We started to make the second wall the following morning. It meant we should finish it in just one day. The second wall was bigger than the first one. We pasted photos on boards all day long. But in during break times we enjoyed taking photos of each other using different instant cameras. When we finally finished it we couldn't see the design on its entirety since it was too huge for our working space.

We set up the two LomoWalls at Künstlerhaus on the final day and had an opening party with Lomography HQ staff and visitors. Everyone was amazed and commented postively. "So huge...! So beautiful...!" When we heard those words, we're felt very happy to have accomplished the mission!
