LomoAmigo: Børns on What It Means to Be a Musical Artist

We chatted with Børns about the release of his new album “Blue Madonna” and the relationship between visual art and music. While on tour in Europe, he took the Lomo'Instant Automat for a spin and created some lovely instant photos for us on the road. Check out the photos and interview here!

Tell us about your current project

Well I’m currently on tour in Europe and I put out my second album in January.

How long have you been playing and writing music?

Since I was pretty young and needed to entertain myself.

What are some things that keep you inspired?

Traveling, reading books, puppet shows.

You have a very distinct image. Who/what influences you when constructing visual concepts to accompany your music?

A lot of it just came from my imagination and working with what I had at the time. Visuals come from experimental foreign film and renaissance paintings.

How do visuals strengthen the songs you create?

Music is a visual medium. It conveys memories and dreams in waking moments. I just try to make my daydreams come to life.

Where did the idea for the “Faded Heart” videos come from?

Lots of the inspiration came from living in Los Angeles. The music video was inspired by a marionette show I saw and an old seedy motel I used to drive past all the time.

Does having live images of you shot on film give a different feeling than digital? Why?

Yes — film is fluid and tangible and uncompromising. I love that you’re forced to focus and actually capture a moment in time.
