Gritty and Raw: Street Photos of Philippines' Xyza Cruz Bacani

2

Starting out as a domestic worker in Hong Kong, Xyza Cruz Bacani's street photography is now internationally acknowledged. Her inspiring story, however, is not her claim to fame. Her ability to capture raw emotions and exhibit them in photos you seemingly can touch has landed her on BBC's 2015 Women of the World, Forbes’30 under 30 Asia 2016, and one of the Magnum Foundation Human Rights Fellows in 2015.

When asked about what her dreams for her craft are, she said, "I want my photography to do, to be able to help people … to me photography is a very powerful tool to change someone’s perspective towards an issue."

Deciding to document human rights issues in Hong Kong and early in her career only comes natural to Xyza, stating that, "I started documenting human rights issues in early 2014 actually. I didn’t really have any idea at first. I knew that these things happen but I wasn’t aware about how huge it was. I was shocked."

As exhibited by her photos in this article, Xyza's current work is mostly street photography but still remains true to her intention of affecting people's perspectives about topics that are dear to her.
