Newcomer of the Week: @saraaah18

Community newcomer Sarah, who goes by the moniker @saraaah18, is all about photographing the subtle beauty of her day-to-day life. She doesn't shy away from grand moments but sees more fulfillment in being able to capture spontaneous, unguarded seconds. Here, she talks more about how her passion for film and experimentation started.

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

Hi! I'm Sarah. Currently finishing off my undergraduate study. Regarding me and photography, I have a family friend who is a photographer which I've always thought was pretty cool. I started getting into film myself just before moving to the Netherlands.. I thought: "Hey wouldn't it be nice to have some nice film photos of your time there?" And I've been back nearly a year now and still taking photos, so it was a nice idea to record my time abroad that just stuck.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

A friend of mine had told me about soaking film in chemicals to get some cool effects, so I was looking online for inspiration/tips on how to do this and I came across Lomography. After that I was just having a look through and thought why not upload my photographs here too.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

To be honest, I don't really apply rules or take such a prescriptive approach to taking photos. I see something or someone that I think looks beautiful and shoot. In a dream world of photographing friends, I'd be so quick that they wouldn't notice me at all.. I think the most beautiful photos are the ones of just general life and relaxed shots.

In this digital age, why still film?

Because I think the beauty of film can't really be replicated with digital. I think that no matter what filter you add or what you do in Photoshop, film is always going to have that slight edge over digital. Plus, I like that film is a bit risky and limited—it teaches you to shoot only when you see something you really want to photograph and to make that shot count.

Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?

Well the only analog camera I've shot with is the Olympus OM10, so probably that one! I love the focus (when I successfully focus), it's so sharp. However I've recently got a Pentax point-and-shoot camera that has a double exposure option so I'm excited to see the photos from that.

What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?

I'm not sure, perhaps one with 120 film would be interesting to experiment with.

Any song, book, or movie you live by?

I love music, picking just one song is hard. Maybe She Just Loves To Fight by Four Tet, which is such a nice relaxing song for any occasion.

Probably this one, I think the effect that the film soup has given to this photo is really cool

No one in particular, I respect that everyone in here is expressing themselves through film and helping to keep it alive.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

Hmmm...mostly seeing everyone's photographs and getting a feel for different cameras and films and effects that you can have—I think that this website is nice because there's so many different styles of photography on it, a lot of inspiration!
