Fishing for Purple — An Interview with Duran Levinson

2

When Duran Levinson — a gritty film photographer from Cape Town, South-Africa — mentioned to us that he'd like to test out some of our film in Hong Kong, we naturally got a little over-excited. His website is literally brimming with some of the coolest people we've ever laid eyes. So, when he told us his gorgeous model sucked on tentacles like popsicles and licked severed fish heads, we stopped what we were doing, leapt to our feet and threw a couple packs of LomoChrome Purple Film his way...

Welcome back to Lomography! How are you, and what have you been working on lately?

I am currently spending my summer based in Berlin, Germany, working on lots of new projects. Mainly music videos and portrait photography projects.

You've travelled to a lot of places in Europe and Asia, where are your favourite cities?

I'm actually from Cape Town, South-Africa. Last year I completed an artist residency in Shanghai, China, which was a great opportunity to explore more of Asia and go back to some of my favourite places.

You named your series of work in Hong Kong, Hong Kong Forever on your website. What does it mean?

It's a representation of how timeless and classic Hong Kong feels to me. I love shooting and visiting Hong Kong. It's a very intense city, but I love to focus on street photography there and have the opportunity to create work I care about. I would regard Hong Kong as my favourite city in the world to shoot in.

Why did you choose to use LomoChrome Purple Film to shoot this time? Any tips on shooting with this film?

I love the aesthetic of the film. I wish I could find it in my hometown but it's difficult. LomoChrome Purple Film has such beautiful colours and the purple really makes the setting feel more interesting and artistic to me in this specific shoot's case.

Where is your favourite place to shoot in Hong Kong?

I would say it has to be in Mong Kong and Sham Shui Po. Those areas are always crazy busy and full of interesting people.

This unique color negative film will astound you by transforming natural tones of your photo into new eye-popping hues. A revival of the psychedelic infrared look from the Kodak Aerochrome film we all love, this film guarantees astounding photographic results.
