The Mechanical Allure — Why Gears and Springs Still Make Sense

For mechanical camera enthusiasts, real steel is the real deal. There’s no better feeling than being able to take photographs with vintage all-metal shooters. To them, there’s something fulfilling about wielding a camera that doesn’t need batteries to work. The thought of it makes their heart race and their creativity flow.

We can’t blame them, though. Mechanical cameras are reminders of an era in photography when gears and springs ruled. There weren’t chips and circuits to control one's exposure, aperture or ISO. Every crank of a lever translated to a symphony of mechanical action within the camera. Mechanical cameras were thoughtfully designed and carefully built. It’s one of the reasons why a lot of film photographers still prefer to shoot with their mechanical cameras today.

Another trait that mechanical cameras possess which lures photographers in is their durability. They are just made to last. Their all-metal construction lets them endure abuse and stand the test of time. You would have to really put a mechanical camera through torture and neglect before you can put it out of commission. And if you do break it, repairs can be easily done by a quick change of parts. That’s how tough mechanical cameras are.

Aside from being durable, mechanical cameras are also known for their accuracy. There’s a reason why a lot of photography masters of old preferred their magnificent metal beauties — they are precision tools. The fact is that if you maintain your mechanical camera well, it will still be able to shoot true as the day it came out of the factory doors.

Let’s not forget how vintage mechanical cameras have that elegant and classic look to them. That alone can make photographers and even onlookers swoon. There are few things that can trump the looks of a vintage camera and that’s one of the reasons why a lot of collectors hold them as prized possessions.
