Fashion Illustrator Dinda Puspitasari's Take on the Lomo'Instant Automat

When we saw Indonesian fashion illustrator Dinda Puspitasari's beautiful work, we just had to get in touch. She's worked with fabulous fashion brands including Louis Vuitton, YSL, Charles & Keith, and more. Now, she's lending her incredible illustration skills to Lomography to create a unique edition of the Lomo'Instant Automat! Hello, Dinda! Welcome to the Lomography Magazine. Please introduce yourself to the Lomography Community.

Hello, I'm Dinda Puspitasari. I'm a fashion illustrator and surface pattern enthusiast based in Jakarta, Indonesia. My works are inspired by fashion, nature (mostly flowers), movies, and city life. When I travel, I love to observe what the locals are wearing, their activities, and their surroundings as a whole. Some of my clients are Dior, Louis Vuitton, Pond's, MAC, NYX and Clinique.

When did you start illustrating?

I've loved drawing ever since I was a kid. My mom is a very stylish and crafty woman, so I inherited her creativity. I grew up reading her fashion magazines and tabloids, and it made me want to become a fashion designer. I've been drawing ladies in stylish outfits since I was in primary school. I just love seeing ladies dressed up beautifully in colorful outfits and quirky silhouettes. I began sharing my illustrations on my blog a decade ago, as a hobby. I didn't go to art or design school, so I never expected to be able to turn this hobby into a professional career.

Can you tell us more about your style and your vision as an artist?

I couldn't really describe my style, but I love to make things look unfinished and messy. I work fast, I don't like to spend much time on a drawing trying to make it look perfect because I really love the unfinished look. If I think that my illustrations look too perfect, I drop some inks or draw more sketchy lines around the main illustration. My vision is to be honest when I draw, to follow what my imagination and my heart want to convey through illustrations.

What's it like being an artist in Indonesia?

It's great because Indonesians in general are so creative. We have many different cultures across the country, the creative local business is growing, and it makes me happy to see so many artists and crafters in Indonesia. I feel that society appreciates art now more than it did a few years ago. However, I live in the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta, and it's easy to feel burnt out. Everything feels so fast, and it gets to the nerves easily. We Jakartans don't have many parks or public spaces to just chill and draw in the afternoon.

What was your first impression of the Lomo'Instant Automat?

The look of the Lomo'Instant Automat is really cool! It reminds me of the Holga, one of the coolest Lomo cameras, but even better because it prints the pictures instantly.

Tell us more about how you designed the Lomo'Instant Automat. How did you conceptualize? What medium did you use?

As the Lomo'Instant Automat has a pretty wide surface, I immediately had the idea of painting a pattern. I used acrylic paints in bright colors. The black Lomo'Instant Automat (Playa Jardín) looks too masculine for my preference, so I painted shapes that are inspired by fireworks in pink and orange, my fave color combo. I also wrote some words on it, in the hope that it would make people smile. On the white Lomo'Instant Automat (Bora Bora), I painted spring florals in a combo of neon pink and turquoise, because it reminds me of my last spring trip to Tokyo.

What was it like to shoot with the Lomo'Instant Automat? Any favorite photos?

I love it! Somehow it gives a warm tone when I shoot outdoors but under the shade – which I love. I'm still learning how to use the splitzer, I'm so excited to use it but I need to do a few more test shoots to figure out how to craft better multiple exposures. The fisheye lens attachment is my ultimate favorite. It's sooo perfect to see the legendary Lomo fisheye pictures on instant film!

Are you working on any exciting new projects that you would like to share with our readers?

I just published a series of surface pattern books called Dinda Puspitasari's World of Pattern. So for the next few months, I'll be busy with projects related to my books and also doing live drawing at events in Jakarta.
