Eva Abeling: A Summer by the Seaside with the Lomography Color Negative 400

Remnants of photographer Eva Abeling's summer by the beach shore manifest into a time capsule series of photographs taken with the Lomography Color Negative 400. Known for her dreamy body portraits, she believes that the film is at its best in the highs of summertime through shades of yellows and blues.

For Eva, her dream summer is all about barefoot walks, the unwinding and bare body, the shells from the shore, and the sun rays glaring across the salty sea and sand as they create their own stars. At first, she was a bit hesitant with the Lomography Color Negative 400 film as her particular vision at the time might be impossible to translate to film, and remained so until she scanned her developed images:

"I was afraid that the film wouldn’t understand the colours of the ocean. That it wouldn’t show the summer sun. That it wouldn't see my dreams. When, one night, I scanned the film I saw that it knew how to capture this dream-like state in the summer. How to capture the blues and yellows just like I saw with my own eyes. The stars in the sea and her soft skin. The dance of salt."

When using the film, Eva suggests that photographers should have a notebook and pen by their bedside and write down their dreams after waking up; find blues and capture skin under the sunlight. She describes the Lomography Color Negative 400 through words spoken as a visual poet:

"[The Lomography Color Negative 400 is] a salty dream of tears is a poem dedicated to the sea. Salt has always been my dearest shadow. The breaths where time doesn’t exist. Whispering past lovers to the waves. Writing your dreams in the sand. Declarations of blues and yellows."

Nowadays, Eva's collaborating with other artists while working on commissions. She's also preparing some prints out of her work and is set to self-publish her own book!
