First Impressions of the New Petzval 80.5 mm f/1.9 MKII Art Lens : Anne-Fleur Sire

Paris based photographer Anne-Fleur Sire is specialized in portrait photography and experimental analogue photography, that's why we asked her to test our new Art Lens, the New Petzval 80.5 mm f/1.9 MKII Art Lens, with our Lomography Color Negative 800 film. Anne-Fleur Sire used this opportunity to shot multiple poetic series of photos with sweet wintery bokeh created by our new Petzval.

Bonjour Anne-Fleur, could you tell us when you started photography?

I've always been curious about everything, sometimes I would say that I started photography at a young age, sometimes, I would that it was 10 years ago because it was 10 years ago that started my passion for this medium and the possibilities offered by it. I started taking analogue photos 4 years ago and it helped me express myself better through the color, the grain or the expired films.

You gave a try to our New Petzval 80.5 mm f/1.9 MKII Art Lens, could you tell us a bit more about the photos we are showing today?

As I adapt to the person posing for me, I thought it was the best to see what I could create with the lense. We have quite a mild winter so it's ideal to be outside. With Alice, I used the very nice morning light of Bois de Vincennes, her skin tone and the color of her hair are quite in harmony with the natural elements. And the lens helped me to focus nicely on her hands, her face while creating this marvelous bokeh specific to the lens. In each of my series, I played with reflections to experiment even more with the lens and its aesthetic.

What were your first impressions upon seeing and holding the Petzval 80.5 lens?

It's, without any doubt, an amazing lens. It is very nice to use it, the focusing ring allows us to be precise. It is fascinating to watch the bokeh appear on the camera!

How does the New Petzval 80.5 mm f/1.9 MKII Art Lens fits with your style?

I like when my subjects stand out from the background, and that it sublimates them. The swirling bokeh creates a kind of halo, it helps to easily obtain original and artistic effects which are nice. The lens allowed me to easily take pictures of hands (a recurring theme in my work) with the hands being the main subjects in the frames, a thing that I can't do with the 50mm lens I usually use.

Could you share your favorite photo taken with the Petzval 80.5 from the series and tells why this shot?

I really like this photo of Alice because we see the full potential of the lens, its quality regarding sharpness and its superb bokeh. This photo reflects the idea that I had in mind: create a memory of a sweet moment in a calm place calling for serenity, like an illusion.

Any advice to share with people shooting with the New Petzval 80.5 mm f/1.9 MKII Art Lens for the first time?

The lens has a certain weight, I think that for starting photographers should try it with a light camera. I regret to not have shot my models from even more far away so don't hesitate to take a step back to see what the lens can do.
