My Favourite Photographer: My Father

18

From the moment my father showed me the photos he had taken when he was young, I came to the conclusion that, without a doubt, love for photography is in our genes.

I’d known as a youngster that my father enjoyed photography. We have a number of books spanning history and techniques of photography at home. I also knew that he enjoyed taking photos of his friends, my mother and his sisters. He has shown me some of the photos he’d taken before but I was really surprised when a couple of days ago, going through the box room, I came across his huge (over 600) collection of slides. That same night we brought out the projector and spent hours admiring his photos.

There were many photos of mountains and monasteries. Reason being that my father really enjoyed climbing with his friends, and on top of his ropes and snap hooks, he always packed his camera.

What delighted me the most after scanning several of his slides was the tone and the softness of the photos: greys, blues, pastel purples and greens.

It has always been obvious that both of us are really into portraits, macro shots and all sorts of filters. So I was surprised by his earlier shots, his portraits in black and white – their lighting and shadows, depth of field and textures…

I still have a lot to learn and who could be a better teacher than my own father?

Great article and great photographs! It seems that the passion for photography skipped a generation in my family. My Dad hasnt any real interest in it, but i found out my Grandfather was an avid photographer who had his own darkroom set up in his work yard. My dad even passed down his Wray Stereograph camera to me! :D
