Meet Andrew Kua, Our Best Daddy Lomo Amigo

A father who loves to dress up his camera and have fun experimenting with all sorts of films, lens and cameras. A son who loves to pose for his beloved daddy. Hmm.. I guess the son inherits  daddy’s ‘gone-wild-with-cameras’ sydrome!

Please tell us a bit about yourself…
Ermm … fat, old, lazy, trigger-happy, drinks too much beer and tired. :D A very busy daddy residing in Singapore who loves photography.

How did you get into photography?
By drinking beer. Really! Long story short … was drinking beer back in 2003 … saw some guys with DSLR … got curious … bought an Olympus C5050 … learned a bit about the basics of photography and was shooting digital until I discovered the Lensbaby. Lensbaby changed the way I think about photography and then it all evolved into a love for Lomography, analogue and experimental stuffs.

How long have you been a Lomographer and how did you get into this whole thing?
Refer to answers to question above. :D Well … I was on the verge of giving up after buying my first Lomo camera (the Frogeye) but was slowly dragged back to loving it by Jimmy a.k.a ymmij and Cindy a.k.a cyanwater of thirtysix fame. There is no turning back now. ;)

What is your first lomographic camera?
My first Lomo camera was one that almost made me give up. It was a Frogeye. I didn’t know anything about cross processing and such then. I bought a Frogeye … loaded a roll of negatives and fired away. It almost gave up when I saw the results. I sold off the camera right away (though I wish I can still buy one now) but later I was lucky cyanwater and ymmij ‘resurrected’ my Lomographic life. 

What is your weapon of choice when it comes to your favorite camera and film?
Analogue – LC-A+ (and perhaps now LC-Wide).

Which lomography/analogue camera you use most often to document your family life?
Usually it will be the Instax 55i or the Instax 500AF. Fast & convenient. ;) On 35mm it will be the LC-A+.

The strangest, funniest, or hands-down greatest photographic/ Lomographic encounter that you have ever had?
Squatting in a corner in a temple in Shanghai during a vacation ages ago … sweating and figuring out how to load a roll of 120 into an old Diana camera I just bought (without knowing how it works).

Where did you take most of the photos and can you tell us something about the photos in your gallery?
Everywhere. I hardly go out on ‘missions’ just to take photos, so the photos I take are usually when I’m out with my friends or family … any place … any time.

What is your favorite object/subject to shoot and why?
It definitely has to be my son! Other than him … I don’t have any particular subject that I prefer but my favorite shots are always photos of things that are in a mess. Yeah … a mess like when I do doubles or multi-exposures and everything is all overlapping, messy and such. Mess is the best! :D

Tell us a bit about your family?
Huh? Just a simple small family … me, wifey and our little boy, Fitzand. My parents are residing in Malaysia as well as 2 of my younger brothers.

How do you meet your wife?
What? Now the questions are getting worse! Years ago when I was walking around with a camera, I got ran over by a car. My camera was crushed and I almost died. Then this lady came over and brought me to the hospital … I survived and I married her. Convinced? Emo? Nah. I knew my wife since secondary school days. Hey I’m such a loyal guy eh? :D

How do you feel at the very moment you knew your wife pregnant?
I knew I could no longer click ‘BUY NOW’ that often in eBay and in Lomography shop anymore.

Why do you name your son Fitzand, is it something meaningful behind this name?
We couldn’t find a name that we could both agree on and then wifey was suggesting ‘Fitzandrew’ (like what Fitzgerald would mean ‘son of Gerald’). I thought that will be neat but it seemed to long and it might cause confusion later when someone calls up and asks for Fitzandrew … someone might confused that with ‘fat Andrew’ (ie. ME!). Hahaha! So I told her maybe we ‘remix’ it a little and both happily agreed on the name ‘Fitzand’. Then came the harder part … a Chinese name. Sorry I don’t know how to type it in Chinese (or even write it … but don’t tell my wife) but I was assigned the ‘task’ to find the equivalent in English. So we ended up naming him ‘Fitzand Kua Faye Zen’. :D

Do you love your son? And your wife?
Of course I do love my son more than anyone or anything else in the world! Oh … this is gonna be published for everyone to see? Oh … then I must add ‘I do love my wife too!’ (else she might burn all my cameras!)

If you came across the situation where your wife and your son drowning in the middle of sea, who will you rescue first and why?
Damn. I saw this question coming. I will save both of them and then swim to the shore … drive a hundred miles … and throw the person who ask me this question into the middle of the sea. :P
