"Being & Becoming" at FIT

The Fashion Institute of Technology proudly presents student work from the BFA Photography program in their first exhibition titled Being & Becoming. Twenty-eight students collaborate in this showcase featuring large-scale printed work and photo-based installations. Equipped with techniques developed through previous semesters and with the support of Adjunct Professors Tiffany Smith and Nat Ward, students have actualized their creative concepts. Through connective themes of identity, intimacy, and creative space, students share in the ever-changing process of “Becoming.” This exhibition serves as a celebration of each artist’s personal vision and dedication to their craft.

NEW YORK – SLA Art Space is pleased to present “Photography,” The exhibition, curated by Francine Rogers and Julia Rothenberg, showcasing the work of Lithuanian photographer Romualdas Požerskis and New York photographer Geoffrey Berliner. While differing in the focal length of their gaze – Berliner is a master of the close-up and Požerskis’ lens is more macro – they both explore intimacy, time, abstraction, and documentation through black and white analogue photography. This show includes 19 photographs from Požerskis’ work documenting his subjects against the background of small town life in Lithuania during the Soviet/post-Soviet Era and 18 of Berliner’s portraits of photographic artists and abstract works utilizing the wet plate collodion process.

PhEST is born out of the need to give back a voice to the thousand identities that form the “sea within the lands”, the need to redefine a new, original imagery. The need is rather to stitch back together the divide between reality and its representation, beyond the theater of truth, beyond that stage of the real that the West has often set up.

Letizia Battaglia today has taken on a fundamental significance in the history of international photography. In “Une histoire mondiale des femmes photographes,” by Luce Lebart and Marie Robert, Laetitia Guillemin recalls Letizia Battaglia especially during the years of her collaboration with the Palermo daily L’Ora, during the bloody war of the Mafia in the 1970s and 1980s. Sono io is not a statement Letizia Battaglia would have ever said. We do so, extrapolating it from a sentence of hers much more articulate phrase that appeared in an interview a few years ago. With this exhibition we maintain the tradition of breaking schemes, erasing themes, ignoring chronologies, and constructing a polyphonic work, as representative as possible, offering a unified vision of a body of work that has lasted almost five decades. Photography and everyday life come together in a single path that highlights the extraordinary visual sensitivity, and the courage to be at the distance of a punch or a caress to conquer the image, often achieved in extreme contexts but always full of dignity. Photography reached Letizia Battaglia thanks to a series of fortuitous elements and becomes an important tool for her emancipation as a woman and mother.

Tamara Saadé’s “Wet Dreams” at Brooklyn Film Camera

Tamara is a journalist and photographer from Beirut, Lebanon. Her work is typically documentary-style, long form, and observational. She covers human rights, the intersectionality between home and identity, and intimacy – with an eye specifically on life in the Middle East. Wet Dreams marks a departure in this regard. She instead turned her attention to the medium of instant photography for this show. Through trial and error, with discarded Polaroid ink, and a lot of patience, Wet Dreams came to life. Each shot is unique, a world of its own, and a story for each to interpret.
