Name: Kathryn Yu
Age: 30
Location: NYC
Occupation: User experience designer/photographer/recreational drinker/jack of many trades

Tell us something about yourself.
I am double-jointed in all of my fingers, both hands.

Since you are a film camera fanatic, which among the numerous Lomographic cameras you’ve tried is your favorite and why?
My heart will always belong to the LC-A+ and its sister, the LC-Wide.

Which of your own Lomographic shots are your favorite?
I can’t choose a favorite child! Well, maybe I can.

Describe the LC-Wide in 5 words.
Extremely wide, and incredibly close!

You have a wicked collection of film photos featuring the “old timey New York City signs” – why were you particularly interested in this subject?
With all the new construction and rapid reinvention of New York City that happens ever year, I wanted to photograph the remnants of old businesses and organizations. It just seemed natural to do it on film. I like it when you can’t tell when a photo was taken.

What’s your favorite photo in the collection and why?
Probably the McSorley’s one. They were here before I was born. They’ll probably still be there when I die. That or some of the Mars Bar ones. Never date a bartender.

If your photos could have a soundtrack, what would it be? (3 songs, title and artist please)
Can I just use every Explosions in the Sky song that they used in Friday Night Lights, please?

What would be your dream city/country to shoot film?
Thailand.

As a professional, you photograph live music. Amongst the various bands that you have already taken photographs of, which among them is/are the most awesome? Which band/s (could be living, disbanded, or dead) would you mostly like to take pictures of and why?

Most awesome to photograph: Janelle Monae, Snoop Dogg, Fucked Up, Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I’d love to shoot the Arcade Fire again. I’ve never photographed U2. I suppose that’s gotta be on any live music photographer’s bucket list!

If I had a time machine, I’d do the Zombies, Talking Heads, and the Rolling Stones, at a minimum..

We all have our idols; which photographers do you look up to? Who or what influences your photographic style?
Autumn de Wilde. Pete Souza of the White House. Lee Friedlander. Lomokev. Stephanie Goralnick. Roger Kisby. Ryan Muir. Brian W. Ferry. Damon Winter of the New York Times. There’s so many!

What tips can you give to the future LC-Wide users?
Take the half frame plate out but switch the bottom to HF. You’ll get cool overlapping double exposures. Also try taking one in horizontal orientation and immediately following it with one in vertical orientation while the setting is on HF but you don’t have the half-frame plate in!

Do you have other creative projects? What other artistic pursuits do you wish you could explore?
That’s all for now!
