Surfin' Munich

“If everybody had an ocean/Across the U. S. A./Then everybody’d be surfin’/Like Californi-a”
Well, when the Beach Boys sang this “Surfin’ USA” 1963, they surely didn’t think that it would be possible to surf in Munich, hundreds and hundreds km far away from the sea (and more from California of course…)

But yes! It’s possible to surf in Munich, in the middle of the city on the river Isar. Ok, it’s not as much exotic as californian beaches, but the “Isar-surfers” have real fun to surf on the only spot in town!

If you go to the “English garden” of Munich (a beautiful park in the middle of the town), you’ll have a chance to see these crazy river surfers at the south end of this park. At the level of the “Prinzregentenstrasse” you have a little bridge on the Isar river with a little lock unde the bridge, giving the river a very powerful stream. And that’s were a cool wave allows the surfers to enjoy their favorite sport, even if it’s a very narrow place to catch a wave… And there’s only one surfer at the same time on the water, the others are waiting their turn, until one falls down in the water.

That’s really a great show to look at and take some pictures of course. There are very often spectators, and you find among them surprised tourists, surf fans or photographers.
