Your Choice for Portraits: Films

10

Last month, we asked you for the camera of your choice when it comes to shooting portraits. We all have preferred films as well when it comes to portraits, so now, why don’t you also share with us the emulsions of your choice for portrait snaps?

I have to admit that I haven’t explored much when it comes to film choices for portraits, but I think I’ve gone far enough to have a staple for people-shots.

When it comes to portraiture, my Nikon FE2 is one of my trusted analogue partners and the medium-speed Fuji Superia 400 my film of choice. It’s an “all-around film” designed for shooting under various lighting conditions. I found it to be a trusty one even when shooting indoors, as long as there is adequate lighting. I also prefer its colors compared to Kodak Ultramax 400, even if I’ve been told that the latter has warmer tones between the two.

I have also recently tried shooting a few portraits using the Lomography Redscale XR 50-200 shot in ISO 50 using my Nikon FE2. I got interesting results, which make me want to take more people-shots with it, even if it’s not your typical pick for portraits!

What about you? Which is/are your film/s choice when taking portraits? Why don’t you share it with us with a comment below, and maybe even tag your friends if you’re curious about their own picks!

I really love Kodak Tri-X 400 for portraits. The grain is really flattering and masks imperfections well.
