LomoAmigo The Standards and the LC-A+

Lomography and FILTER Magazine teamed up to present a special collaboration! We provided several artists from the Culture Collide festival in Los Angeles some Lomography cameras and here is our sixth LomoAmigo from our Culture Collide LomoAmigo series!

A British-Thai fusion band banging out belting alternative indie rock and roll, The Standards have been playing the alternative music scene across the world for the past four years. Matt and Paul Smith (not related) hail from London and Nit, Mc and Nay are from Bangkok. Having met through the clubs and pubs of Bangkok, they set about for new musical highs and to bring alternative music to the forefront. Following on from their successful EP Well, Well, Well in 2008, The Standards have gone on to make their debut album, Nations, a raw, edgy record full of stories and undertones from the pubs clubs and streets of the cities they’re from.

How long have guys been Lomographers? How did you start?
I’ll have to be honest and say none of us had as much as touched a Lomo camera before we were kindly given one by you guys so that’s how it all started.

How do you incorporate Lomography in your daily life?
I’ve certainly been trying to take plenty of pictures on a regular basis since having the camera. They take such cool pictures, it’s hard not to think what everything might look like captured by one.

How does your music influence your photography (or vise versa)?
By making sure we look like rock and roll stars in every picture!!

Matt: Shithot
Nay: Rock
Paul: Rad
Mc: Speechless
Nit: Lovely

If you could shoot your favorite spots in London and Thailand, where would you go with your camera?
Matt: My Nan’s house in London and Paul’s bathroom in Bangkok
Paul: The skyline from Franks in Peckham, a pop-up bar on the roof of a multi-storey car park in deepest, dingiest London with the most spectacular view.
In Thailand, the Train Market, a vintage market open Saturday nights, full of Vespas and everything 50s and Ataris and stuff. Proper cool.

If you could hang around as a camera on anyone’s neck, who would that be?
Mc: Queen Elizabeth II
Nay: Barack Obama

What is the atmosphere for your dream gig/concert like? Can you describe it as a photograph?
Nit: When everyone is jumping, singing and sweating!!! Pouring their heart out and having the time of their life.

The strangest, funniest, hands-down greatest, or most “unusual” photographic/Lomographic encounter that you have ever had.
Matt: I used to share a flat with two friends in London when I was in my late teens/early 20’s. One Friday night, I came home from work to find a small party taking place that was growing quite rapidly with people. At one point, one party goer decided it was time he took a number 2. He would have gotten away with it but for the amount of time he spent in there. After maybe 30 minutes of some serious door banging and threats, we broke the door open to find him sat reading a discarded newspaper, trousers round ankles. Very quickly indeed, nearly everyone from the party had bundled into the tiny bathroom to set themselves up all around him to pose for a photo. They were standing, squatting, climbing, hanging and despite the obvious methane stench, smiling they’re silly heads off. I believe I sat on his shoulders and I have the vague recollection of one young lady sitting on his knees. Those were the days!!

What’s coming up on the horizon? New projects? What’s in the works and what’s on your mind?
We’re organising a stage at a big festival in Bangkok that will be headlined by Young Knives and comprise of bands from all over Asia so we’ll be playing at that. Then we’ve got some dead good singles that need releasing ASAP. They’ll be some good MVs and an EP to come.

Any advice for Lomographers?
Keep on keeping on, you’re doing a great job!!!
