Perfect Combination: Kodak Portra 160 for My Diana F+ in the Summer Season!

1

In my previous article, I wrote to you about the perfect combination of an high contrast b/w film with a rangefinder camera for the winter season. Here, I explain to you why the professional Kodak Portra is a perfect film for a Diana F+ in the summer season.

The Diana F+ is one of my preferred camera to use in the summer season, especially for its dreamy optical and chromatic aberrations. I used this camera with many films, but my best results were obtained with a professional film, like in this case, when I used a Kodak Portra 160NC taking some photos on a Tunisian beach in Skanes.

Why I love this film? Simple: because the color rendition is accurate as expected for a professional film! Maybe you can ask to me: but this is an expensive professional film, it is a pity to use it into a toy camera with a plastic lens! Well…this is in part true, because a professional film is less tolerant about exposure errors, and because the plastic lens has many chromatic aberrations that modify the “true” colors of the scene. But, I compared this results with others, and the tones of the Portra are so delicate that this film contribute to enhance the “dreamy” effect of the Diana lens!

The first four photos of this article are taken using the Portra film. Compare these images with the two images below, taken with a not professional film (a Lomography film). Again, interesting an dreamy tones, but more grain and a “less delicate” color rendition!

Let’s return to our Portra film, with another series of photos:

As you can see, the color of the sea is awesome!

The grain is very small, almost invisible!

As you can see in the last two photos, the lens of the Diana, together with this film, produced an almost monochromatic image when I made a shoot in strong backlight! This is a great film, even with a toy camera!

The Diana F+ is a new twist on the ‘60s classic cult camera. Famous for its dreamy and soft-focused images, the Diana F+ is now packed with extra features such as panorama and pinhole capabilities. Available in our Online Shop.
