LomoGuru of the Week: Emkei

It has been only a few years since he joined our Community but he sure has tons of wisdom to share. Aside from that, his familiarity is another LomoGuru factor to count!

It’s just fine time he receives the Guru seat! For his stunning Lomographs and the sweet friendship he has shared in our Community are more than enough to be happy about. Coming from Slovakia, in which he says Lomographers are few (calling more out there!), let us say hello to emkei!

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

My most memorable experience? Oh, that is a tough question. I like it, of course, when I get to win some Piggies. I like it when I learn something new like interesting experiments. I also like it when somebody writes me. In short, I am very happy that I have found this Community of people who have the same interests in photography just like me. Today, I can not imagine the day without looking at the website.

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends?

In Slovakia, which is not a huge country, the Community of Lomographers is not as big as other countries like Spain, Germany, or the USA. But sure we have Lomo-meetings which I visit from time to time, :) So I mostly know people from close destinations. My friends, whom I’ve known through my Lomography path are: novotao, dagmik, korppi, paulinetuesday (these I have met personally) then there’s erikagrendel, skyshooter and from abroad blueskyandhardrock, sobetion, and of course my dear atria007!

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

Definitely. I think that as life goes on, man gains some definition of himself — of what he likes and what he wants to do. And for me, Lomography is the right thing that never lets me down. For me it will be [more] interesting in five or 10 years because the possibilities of Lomography are unfailing and because you can do new experiments from time to time. And the stunning results that make you feel like "Wow, that is great!“ is always worth it. :)

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

For me, my all-time favourite Lomo camera is the Holga. And why? Because the Holga is definitely Lomo! Plastic body, plastic lens, not having to watch it all the time, not having to brake it or something. :) And the results are simply the Lomo-best! Although my favourite of these days would be the Horizon Perfekt. Why? I have always loved the panoramic pictures and it since it is my last bought camera which mean I use it most of the time. And as I have found out, it is also briliant for experiments! If you would like to see some, here: Horizon Filters

Please share your most favourite Lomographic photo that you took and explain why.

It is not easy to choose only one picture, but if I have to, it would be this:

And why? Well, this is the exact example of the brightness of theHolga camera. And I did not have to use double exposure, splitzer, nor any filters. The right light, great film which is Fuji Velvia 50, was cross-processed and that was it! This picture feels right for me because of its atmosphere, colors, and its simplicity.

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

To see as many pictures as you can and to get in your eye what you really like (though this may be different for each of us). When man knows how to identify beauty, he can get it out of himself. And of course, if portraiture is your domain, you should see more of those. Secondly, do not be afraid of taking pictures! Sure, when you’re just starting with shooting, you’ll be afraid of not spoiling the film, which is not cheap. So, the right way to do it would be to study and read about taking pictures first. I prefer buying older books bought at second-hand bookshops as these are not so expensive and because the advice given in the past are still valid today. Especially the ones concerning analogue photography. The most important thing and the basis is the exposition! And also take your time – do not hurry! Everything has its process and you can learn everything step by step. Have a Lomo feeling, and you‘ll get it right. ;)
