Lomography Experimental Lens Kit: First Impressions by Michael Emhofer

Moving on to our next interview, another of our folks from the Lomography HQ in Vienna has stepped up to tell us about his insights and first impressions on the Lomography Experimental Lens Kit. Let’s hear from Michael Emhofer and see some of his best shots yet after the jump!

1. Can you share with us your first impressions using the Lomography Experimental Lens Kit?

My first impression was, “Well, that’s odd.” After shooting the first few frames I was amazed at how close the look of the images came to those taken using a Holga or an analogue plastic lens camera.

2. How did it feel to go digital using the Lomography Experimental Lens Kit, considering your analogue photography background?

I’m still working out how to treat the camera and kit. I’ve been using it with my full-spectrum-converted EP-1 to do some infrared photography and like the overall look I get with that combination. The full-spectrum setup has some qualities that are not available to film and the lens kit gives me more of that analogue feel and unpredictability for that kind of photography. I kind of like the low barrier to take a frame (which makes the “don’t think, just shoot” a bit easier).

3. What do you like most about shooting with the Lomography Experimental Lens Kit?

The combination of wired plastic lenses compared with a relatively large image sensor has been up to now completely unavailable when shooting digital and this kit gives me new options to play with that combination.

4. Which feature or function of the Lomography Experimental Lens Kit did you enjoy shooting with?

Most definitely the second shutter with the ability to do unpredictable multiple exposure shots.

5. Which subject/s and/or technique/s do you think is/are best for shooting with the Lomography Experimental Lens Kit?

Subject-wise, anything that you can get close to. Having shot a lot of infrared with my lenses I’m quite happy with using the kit for various plants which give nice IR-effects. Other than that, it works very well in a social/party environment where people just play with the different lenses (fisheye!).
