LomoAmigo on the Move : New Sprocket Rocket Shots from Kate Bellm

2

After 6 years in Berlin, photographer Kate Bellm decided to leave Germany to explore the beauty of Middle America — road tripping through Cuba, Mexico and Guatemala. Even though she hasn't dropped by the Lomography Embassy Store Berlin in a long time, we are always excited to receive e-mails decked with her stunning new analogue work! Enjoy the view Lomo Peeps!

Hey Kate, how are you? Where have you been lately? Please tell us a bit about your recent travels.

Hi! I've been traveling through Cuba, Mexico and Guatemala shooting photos for an upcoming exhibition I will have in Berlin, at the Pavlovs Dog gallery.

Cuba

Why did you decide to leave Berlin? Is there any chance of coming back?

I had been in Berlin for 6 years so it was time for a change but I am always going to be coming back home ;). I am now living between Deia and LA.

You had your Sprocket Rocket camera with you all the time. What places did you shoot in Cuba & Mexico?

In Cuba we traveled the entire country from top to bottom, my favorites being Baracoa and Vinales, I shot a lot of crumbling buildings in Havana and of course oldtimer cars. In Mexico we traveled along the Pacific Ocean and these photos were shot along the way from South to North. My favorite is the picture of the injured owl we found in the bushes, we spent the entire day on a mission to save it ;).

Do you have some travel tips for our Lomography Community? If you visit one of these countries where should you go to capture some amazing scenery?

There is no way to tell people how to travel as everyone finds the way and places that suit them, but I suggest getting a car and road tripping as much as possible, pushing yourself out of your comfort level to get the shot. You can take pictures anywhere in the world, that's the beauty of it!

Cuba

We like how experimental your photos turned out in the gallery above. Which film did you use? How did you achieve this effect?

I used a color slide film and then cross processed it.

Is there any film you love to use the most with the camera?

All film work nicely but I was really happy with the color slide film on the sprocket rocket. I wanna try shooting black and white next.

What should you keep in mind while traveling with film? Did something unexpected happen to you?

I don't really do anything special in particular, just carry it on me at all times and get it developed as soon as I can so I don't forget about. Oh and of course mark the film that's sprocket rocket so I get it developed correctly.

Mexico

What happens next for you? Any upcoming photo shoots or further travel?

I have a show coming up in Berlin and then I am moving to Deia in Majorca for the foreseeable future as I want to create a free space for artists to come and get inspired. Loveartsunseaforever!

Nice article, but you must correct that Cuba, Mexico and Guatemala are not in South America :)
