Summer Hot Spots: Whitstable, UK

Fun under the British sun – yes, it is possible!

Whitstable has always been my favorite seaside town in the United Kingdom. I even had an exhibition on my double exposure photographs there once. So you can imagine my excitement when one of my best friend’s nephews ended up buying a house there and invited us over to stay for a weekend while he was away.

You don’t have to invite us twice, let me tell you!

Me and my singer-songwriter friend Louise Le May finally had a chance to make our long-planned photo project happened, but I will write a separate post about that.

We were super lucky with the weather, and as you can see from the pictures Louise even went swimming twice. She was the only one who went swimming, though, as we were more interested in craft beers and seafood.

In Whitstable there are three great pubs right on the beach, so while your friends, children, or relatives swim, you can enjoy a pint or two of fantastic local ales, lagers, and stouts by the local Whitstable Brewery. This is also a paradise for oyster lovers, as well as for those who love crayfish, crab, and lobster. They’re always fresh from the sea and are delicious.

On Saturday night we dined at the world-renowned beachfront restaurant called The Whitstable Oyster Company, where booking is essential.

On Sunday we had lunch at Spanish-style tapas restaurant called JoJo's, which is a half an hour walk down the beach (this helps to get an appetite!). Booking is essential, cash only, no cards.

But don’t miss out on the fish market! It has the freshest oysters right from the seller, as well as juicy Kent strawberries, ice cream and more.

Whitstable is about an hour, 15-minute drive from London, or you can reach it by train within 1.5 hours.

Another really wonderful Travel album!! In the 1960's, my late cousin, Butchie, spent several years as an instrument repairman at some naval base on Scapa Flow in Scotland. He said there were sunny days, 1 in May and 1 in September, and he had to live in a room with meals over a pub, "womanned" by "The Great Strapping Wench", and Sunday Supper, once a month, was Haggis.

@herbert-4 haha, I think those times are long gone. although, I live nearby a pub called Turner's Old Star , supposedly bought by Turner for his mistress who used to run it while he had a room upstairs and wandered around Docklands to learn about low life and paint his seascapes. I am pretty sure the food was dreadful back then.

BTW... Butchie's Mother had a Kodachrome slide of Butchie and the denizens of the pub, which looked like a 2 story pile of rocks with thatched roof. Butchie was about 5'5" and so were the rest of the denizens, m and f, standing in front in woolens and leather hats. Great Strapping and her little girl, both, were about 1' taller in bare feet in huge flouncy dresses, black with white ruffles, and great clouds of orange/ apricot hair, looking thorough capable of keeping order. I wish I had that slide.
