Petzval Lens and Adaptor with Olympus OM-D E-M5 Micro 4/3 Camera

Using my Canon EOS 20D, I already discovered the amazing bokeh effect of the Petzval Lens. So I was really excited to try it with my favorite digital hybrid camera, Olympus OM-D E-M5. Just attach an adaptor and off you go!

For my 30th birthday, my lovely friends gave me the Petzval Lens from Lomography. I was so happy to discover this incredible and luxurious lens. What a treat for a camera lover!

I had my first shoot at the 2015 Mondial du Tatouage (a tattoo exhibition in Paris). I used Canon EOS 20D. It was a complex environment for a first trial. The setting was dim and there was so much movement. It was a bit difficult to stabilize the camera and choose a good speed. But I got it! A lot of people came to ask me not about tattoos but about my golden lens.

Most of time I practice with my Olympus OM-D E-M5 Camera. It’s a hybrid (micro 4/3) and a very compact one. Its “artistic” settings are lovely, especially the black and white full grain, sepia and dramatic filters. But how can Olympus adapt to Petzval? Easy! I found the lens adaptor EOS-M4/3 at the Lomography Shop. Imagine how funny it is to use a tiny hybrid camera with a huge gold nose!

Let’s go outside (no, not the George Michael song)! My first walk was a good opportunity to try my new hybrid friend with its beautiful bokeh effect.

I was sauntering along Luxembourg Park in Paris when I saw some kids playing with boats. What a great moment to shoot!

Petzval is definitely the best lens for portrait photography, whatever the camera and photo setting.

I've seen a lot of photos taken with the Petzval lens, some of them with the gorgeous swirly bokeh, and others with a "standard" bokeh. Which conditions are needed to get that swirly bokeh? Only when the diaphragm is wide open?
