Prepare for the Big Comeback of Kodak Ektachrome

13

Film photographers rejoice! The classic Kodak Professional Ektachrome is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2017 according to Kodak Alaris, an independent company. The films will be produced in its film factory in Rochester, New York.

According to the Independent company Kodak Alaris, the resurgence of popularity in analog photography was reason for the comeback. They will also produce a 135-36x format of the Ektachrome.

“The film, known for its extremely fine grain, clean colors, great tones and contrasts, became iconic in no small part due the extensive use of slide film by National Geographic Magazine over several decades.” said Kodak Alaris.

The Ektachrome is a reversal film (a color positive film, also known as "transparency" or "slide"), using E6 development process, an ideal for high-resolution projection or presentations, printing and scanning in the professional scale. The Ektachrome is distinct for its cinematic and distinct look -- fine grain, clean colors, great tones and contrasts. The film will also be available for motion picture.

“We are seeing a broad resurgence of excitement about capturing images on film. Kodak is committed to continuing to manufacture film as an irreplaceable medium for image creators to capture their artistic vision. We are proud to help bring back this classic.” said Steve Overman, Kodak's chief marketing officer and president of the Consumer & Film Division.

While we await the Ektachrome for its comeback, take a look at these photographs taken with the Ektachrome in the Lomographic fashion.

Wow, this is awesome! Initially only in 35 mm and Super8, but hopefully in other formats also later on. I shot this a few years ago on expired Ektachrome 64T (120 format): www.lomography.com/homes/wesco/albums/2022066-lefkada-2014-…

@Stouf: I think they will start with one 100 iso general purpose (daylight) film, as pictured in the announcement. So it might be a slightly new variant from the older 100G, 100VS etc. versions, to be able to use the same coating for 35mm and Super8.

This is wonderful news! As someone who got into analog photography after Kodak stopped making the original Ektachrome, I just can't wait to shoot a fresh roll of it for the first time in my life! :)
