First Impressions of the Neptune Convertible Lens System: Marine Toux

2

Marine Toux is a young French photographer whose work has already been featured in the Lomography magazine and in some magazines. After 3 years studying photography, Marine decided to work exclusively with analog cameras. With every shot, Marine is telling us some stories, using her models, accessories, and locations to build her own worlds. For this new series, she used the Neptune Convertible Art Lens System and shot Anna Marx, a model from Girl Management agency.

Hello! Tell us a bit about your photography background.

Hi! Well, I studied photography for 3 years in Paris. When I finished my studies, I wanted to do only analog, which I prefer anyway for the texture and its DIY side. And my camera had been stolen, so I just never bought a new one. This forced me to learn more about films and to think before taking a picture, not after. So now I am just more comfortable with analog than digital.

Few months after my degree, I started working at Lomography in Paris and developing my photographic style at the same time. For a moment it was more about street photography, natural portraits etc. But I wanted to express a very personal point of view so I've started building my own worlds and telling stories instead of sticking to the ones around me.

What would you call your photography style?

It’s a bit difficult to define my style actually, it’s always evolving. I would say it’s about girls, colors, and experiments! Testings are very important for me, I’m always trying new things: films, treatments, camera, accessories, etc.

What was your first impression upon seeing and holding the Neptune Convertible Art Lens System?

To be honest, I was a little bit confused when I first saw it, it has a very particular design! It was necessary to take some time to learn how it works at the beginning but then it was very easy and offered many options.

How does the Neptune Convertible Art Lens System fit into your (photography) style?

I’m always working with fixed focal lengths, 35mm or 50mm, so this kit was matching with my style. With the 80mm in addition, it was perfect for closer portraits.

It's convenient to have this kind of kit, the focal lengths suit to almost every situation, we can use creative apertures with all of them, and it’s smaller and lighter than three independent lenses (very nice when you work outside).

Could you share your best photo (taken using the lens system) and the story behind that shot?

I think my favorite one is this one, shot with the 80mm. The sharpness is good and the bokeh is very pretty! This picture makes me want to shoot more with an 80mm :)

Any pointers that one should keep in mind when using the Convertible Art Lenses?

I think the most complicated to keep in mind is to change the aperture zone with the focal length. I confess I forgot several times, but I think is just a habit to get used to.

Other interests aside from photography?

Travel, eat pizza and ... magazines and photobook?
