Singaporean visual artist Lyn Low rooted her photography career on mysterious and hilarious beginnings. At present, she uses photography as a means of inquiry. Her color palette converts her work from mundane images to more artistic visuals.

Shot with the Sony A7R and the Petzval 58 Art Lens, the following photos are just a part of a project she is currently working on called Just Enough.

Hello, Lyn. How did you get started with photography?

Personal issues. (laughs) Funny but true. It’s a tool I use to investigate an issue and get closure.

How would you describe your style as a photographer?

I don’t know if it’s a style but I am quite intuitive when it comes to photography. When I feel a moment, I just press the shutter.

What subjects do you particularly like to take photos of?

Nothing in particular really, I take photos of everything and anything. However, incidental details and gestures intrigue me the most.

What/Who do you consider as the greatest influence in your craft?

Colors and tiny details. When I photograph based on colors, my images naturally have a minimalist look to it. Having an eye for detail also means I go really close to the subject. Therefore, these are the things that greatly influence how my images look today.

Can you tell us a little more about your Petzval 58 Art Lens experience? Any interesting things you encountered or challenges?

This lens is one of the most interesting ones I have ever used. I think it makes really cool circular bokeh, which I sadly didn’t get used to and eventually forgone. It took me quite sometime to get used to photographing with it. An issue I faced was changing the aperture with the aperture blades. The lens slowed me down quite a bit, but still, I am thankful for this new experience.

Any tips for first-time shooters using the Petzval 58 Art Lens?

Have a plan in mind of what to photograph and work the bokeh to your advantage. I would highly recommend you to take portraits or landscapes with this where the subjects don’t move that much. Also, be very patient.

Do you have ongoing or upcoming projects that you would like to tell the community about?

Yes I do. These photographs are part of a personal series called
Just Enough. I will continue taking photographs, and hopefully, make a photobook at the end of everything.
