The year 2004 was a year when terrorism, natural disasters, and elections plagued the newsreel. But in all darkness, there's always a ray of light. It was a year when the European Union expanded by accepting 10 new states -- Poland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Malta, and Cyprus. More trips to Europe meant more photographs of the picturesque streets! Moreover, European football has never been more exciting as the 17-year-old Lionel Messi debuted for F.C. Barcelona against Espanyol.

Speaking of connections, While it was the year that TV shows Friends and Frasier ended, Facebook was launched in founder Mark Zuckerberg's Harvard dormitory room. Little did he know, the world would become more interconnected due to his social media platform.

With the first same-sex marriage having been performed in Massachusetts, solidarity has never been better in 2004.
