Meet the TEN AND ONE AWARDS judges: Daniel Alea

Daniel Alea is a Spain based photographer who sees photography as a way of expressing and getting to know oneself. Apart from being a great editorial and portrait photographer, he is one of the founders of the magazine Unusual Journey. Meet our new TEN AND ONE AWARDS judge!

Hello! Welcome to the Lomography Magazine. Please introduce yourself to our readers.

I am Daniel Alea, I am a photographer. I work mainly on editorial portraits and I am also immersed in a number of different personal projects.

How did your interest with photography start?

When I was 18 years old I was on exchange in Canada finishing high school, and when I came back to Spain I had to decide whether to go to university, or what to do with my life. I had never considered it, but I had always bought magazines and followed photographers, so when I came back to Spain I started to take some courses to see how it went, and little by little here we are...

How would you define photography? What makes it worth pursuing?

For me, photography is a way of expressing myself and of getting to know myself. It makes me consider things and see the world in a different way. I can't imagine living without taking photos.

What inspires you?

There are a lot of things that inspire me, but the one that inspires me the most is travelling and getting to know new places and new people.

What makes a good photograph?

There are so many things that can make a good photograph, but I like the ones that tell something, the ones that have a story behind them.

Any advice that you’d like to give aspiring photographers?

To shoot a lot of pictures and study all the photographers they can.
