Meet the TEN AND ONE Awards Judges: Yoshitaka Goto (@gocchin)

Lomographer Yoshitaka Goto is known in the community for his jaw-dropping multiple exposure photographs shot with the Lomo LC-A+ and splitzer. In this brief interview, our TEN AND ONE Awards judge from Japan speaks his mind about his passion for shooting experimental images.

Welcome to the Lomography Magazine. Please introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Yoshitaka Goto from Gifu City, Japan. I'm a film photographer, well known as a multiple exposure shooter. I usually have solo exhibitions in Japan a couple of times in a year and consistently join art fairs both local and overseas. My works are used as artworks for commercial things. I love shooting double and multiple exposures using the LC-A+ with Splitzer. I'm good at double exposure by film swapping with myself.

How did your interest with photography start?

When I was still using a digital compact camera, my friend lent a digital SLR camera to me. I have never used one before so I was excited it. After that I bought it and always brought it everywhere. After a few years, I got tired of it because I met Lomography!

How would you define photography? What makes it worth pursuing?

It's very difficult to answer for me. Because in Japanese, "photography" means shooting reality. In my case, I often shoot multiple exposure so my works don't reflect what reality is. I believe photography is meant for people to have fun.

What inspires you?

I often watch sci-fi movies and visit exhibitions of painting, graphic arts, etc. Because they have some hints of multiple exposures.

What makes a good photograph?

Imaginations.

Any advice that you’d like to give aspiring photographers?

Don't be controlled by the camera, you should control your it. You know recent fine digital cameras work very cool, but it means every one can shoot beautiful
photographs up to a certain level. Are you satisfied with it? If not, you should study your camera well and know what kind of images you want to shoot before starting.
