Cinematic Captures - an Interview with Arnaud Bresson

To others, it's just a photograph. To those who make them, they're stories created with light and chemicals. Arnaud Bresson uses his passion for photography and his love for cinema to weave stories. He combines these two aspects to bring forth images that are visually enticing. He talks about his work, his passion, and his process in this short interview. Read on and learn more about Arnaud and his photographs.

Hello, Arnaud. Welcome to the Lomography Online Magazine! How did you get started on your photographic journey?

Hello and thank you Lomography Mag! I'm a young director at Division Paris. They taught me the image in a broader sense. Many directors are also photographers in this production company. I watched, learned, and in the end, tried!

How would you define photography?

To me it's translating concepts into visuals. And it's a passion.

What's your favorite thing about it?

I like capturing people's souls. To me there's no point in taking pictures if they don't tell a story. That's probably my director's side.

We're a fan of your work. What makes you stay with film photography?

To be honest, I'm just a huge fan of the object itself. I sometimes buy a camera only because of its design. It's only later that I learn how to use it and end up turning its flaws into advantages. I like to be surprised by its performance.

We love your images. You've got this fresh, vibrant, and youthful aesthetic going on. Was this a particular style you were going for?

Thank you! I do not think I'm trying to be cool, fresh or anything else... Maybe it's because there is a real story behind every photo I take. Lately and especially in fashion, you see so many "soul-less" images — they don't say anything. I always try to spark an emotion and inspire curiosity with the images I create.

Some of your photos have this Warhol-esque and fashion photography feel to them. It's just visually engaging and upbeat. How do you create such lively photographs?

That's a great compliment, ahaha. My girlfriend is a stylist, we have fun together putting up some projects, this is the main [reason.] She creates style, and I try to play around that. The key is to enjoy yourself.

How would you describe your style?

I don't know if I can really define my style yet. I am still in a self-discovery approach, testing stuff out.. but I am very influenced by cinema in general for sure. If I have to, I'd say it's cinematographic. Not because of the visual rendering, but rather because I am trying to tell a real story when I shoot an editorial.

What makes you hit the shutter?

Honestly, I have no idea.

How do you take photographs? Do you have a specific vision in your mind before you shoot or do you just feel things around and trust your instincts?

Like I was saying, I try to find people who have a soul and an attitude. I am just like you — a mere spectator of the scene except that I stop the time. I always prepare my shoots upstream, I leave very little to improvisation in a general way. I come from the world of the music clips, and with clips you never improvise.

Do you believe that photography is a form of art? Why or why not?

Hmm, some photographers have marked their generation with their pictures so you can definitely call it an art. I think that today, it's also a form of expression for many young people who are no longer able to communicate.

Lastly, what's next for Arnaud Bresson?

My next step is managing to combine my two passions: movies and photography! :) Always focusing on the vision I have. In a nutshell: WORK WORK AND WORK SOME MORE.
